Whether I taught grades 1, 2, or 3... whenever we covered the topic of money... the differences between students' understanding always made money a tricky topic to cover. Some students still needed to learn the names and values of coins while others were ready to add them! How do you meet the needs of such diverse learners?!
That's why I created this collection! Now you can differentiate with complete ease!

Ontario Curriculum connections:

Grade 1

  • identify and describe various coins (i.e., penny, nickel, dime, quarter, $1 coin, $2 coin), using coin manipulatives or drawings, and state their value (e.g., the value of a penny is one cent; the value of a toonie is two dollars);
  • count forward by 10’s to 100, using a variety of tools and strategies (e.g., count groups of dimes)

Grade 2

  • represent, compare, and order whole numbers to 100, including money amounts to 100¢
  • compose and decompose two-digit numbers in a variety of ways, using concrete materials (e.g., compose 37¢ using one quarter, one dime, and two pennies)
  • estimate and count (using the ¢ symbol) the value of a collection of coins with a maximum value of one dollar.
  • add money amounts to 100¢

Grade 3

Note: The coins in this game go up to one dollar (not ten). This game is perfect for grade 3 students needing extra practise with adding coins.

  • represent and describe the relationships between coins and bills up to $10 (e.g., “There are eight quarters in a toonie and ten dimes in a loonie.”)
  • estimate, count, and represent (using the $ symbol) the value of a collection of coins

SPOT IT & CLICK It™ games can achieve the following:

    • Review concepts in a fun way! Since the games auto-shuffle the cards, students can play a NEW game EVERY time. This is great for students who need a lot of practise. They can get the review they need without getting bored ... and you don't need to plan something different each time!
    • Assessment for learning: You can analyze student responses and gather class data. Use this data to plan lessons around skills that need further explicit teaching.
    • Assessment of learning: Tests can make students feel overwhelmed or anxious. By presenting a quiz in game format, you now take away the stress and anxiety! The games score students' answers too, which also makes it low stress for you!!
    • Early finishers: This is a perfect activity for independent play.
